Travel For Under £50 - Some helpful advice

money

The huge growth in budget air travel over the last few years means that it is now possible to fly to Europe for under £50 including taxes. That's less than a return train ticket across a couple of uninspiring counties in the UK.

Budget airlines often advertise flights for a couple of pence, yet try to book them and they're all gone. Check out our top ten tips below and you should be able to find a flight to Alicante or Valencia at a great price.

  1. Subscribe to airline newsletters. They will alert you to upcoming special deals and bargains before they are national advertised.
  2. Compare prices by using flight search engines such as Sky Scanner. Search engines will let you hunt for flights across budget airlines by destination and will save you time surfing the net by letting you target your search quickly.
  3. Check out bargain hunting sites such as Travel Zoo and Travel Supermarket for the best deals.
  4. Book at the last moment. There are often bargains to be had if you're happy to buy your flight just a few days before you're due to travel.
  5. If you're not prepared to wait until the last minute, booking in advance is the best option. How far in advance varies from carrier to carrier and depends on when you want to travel, but six to ten weeks is the optimum time to secure a cheap flight.
  6. School holidays and weekends are generally the most expensive times to fly, but if you have to travel at these times, the first flight out of the day and the last one back tend to be the best buys.
  7. Weekday flights are usually the cheapest time to fly - especially Monday to Thursday - and, again, the first flight out and last back offer the best prices.
  8. Consider flying out with one airline and returning with another, there is no price concession for buying a return flight with one airline.
  9. Whether you're booking last minute or well in advance, sites such as Which Budget and Flight Checker will help you find cheap deals.
  10. For a list of who flies where and from which airport, click on sites such as Guardian Travel and Flight Mapping.
